SPECTRAL HEMISPHERIC IRRADIANCE MEASUREMENTS (SHIM)</H2>

The SWS-SHIMS rack on the Facility for Atmospheric Airborne Measurements (FAAM) BAe-146 aircraft houses three separate but related instruments. The Short Wave Spectrometer (SWS), measures directionally dependant radiance (Wm2 steradian-1 mm-2) and two Shortwave Hemispheric Irradiance Measurement Spectrometers (SHIMS) measuring irradiance (Wm-2 mm-2). One SHIMS unit is situated on the top of the aircraft (upper SHIMS or USH), and the other is underneath the aircraft (lower SHIMS or LSH). All three instruments measure radiation in the range 0.3 – 1.7 µm using two Zeiss diode array spectrometer modules. SWS has been operated on the BAe-146 since 2004, USH and LSH were added in 2006.
