Useful information before your first flight at FAAM
Most of the information you need to know before your first flight at FAAM is covered in our User Guide.
Apply for an Airtask pass
If you will be flying on the FAAM aircraft, you must apply for an Airtask pass. This needs to be completed at least three days before the flight.
Flight scheduling
The flight schedule is subject to change depending on factors such as atmospheric conditions and instrument availability. We aim to plan flights at least two days in advance. Flights are confirmed by midday the day before, and timings and the crew list are emailed to project participants to give at least one day’s notice.
Pre-flight briefing
The pre-flight briefing takes place two hours before take-off, and it is mandatory to attend before your flight. It is the main coordination meeting for the flight, and outlines the operational science plan and safety briefing.
If you miss the pre-flight briefing you may be unable to board the aircraft.
During the flight
Lunch and water will be provided on the aircraft for all passengers. If you have any specific dietary requirements or food allergies please email Airtask ARA Operations or contact FAAM in advance.
Wear comfortable clothing. We recommend bringing several light layers, as the cabin temperature can fluctuate during a flight and is often very different to the outside air temperature at the airport. Shorts and open-toed footwear are not permitted.
First-time flyers
If it is your first time flying with us, you must receive a New Flyer Induction from FAAM before your first flight. We also recommend attending our New Flyer Workshop (which includes the New Flyer Induction.
If you are a Mission Scientist or will be operating an instrument during flight, you should have a familiarisation flight before your project flights. On this flight you will be assigned a mentor who will be an experienced user of the aircraft.
Many flyers want to take photos of their time with FAAM. There are some things to be aware of when using a camera around the aircraft. Please familiarise yourself with the Photography and Filming Guidance document.
